Criftins Church of England Primary School

Sports Summer 2023

Sports Day 2023 Class 3 and 4’s Sports Day took place in the morning with the help of Lakeland’s Sports Leaders, to whom we are very grateful, and our very efficient Year 6 children led the afternoon session for Class 1 and 2.

We had 3 girls try out for the North West Shropshire swimming team at Oswestry School, they swam all 4 strokes competing against all the local schools in our area. Fingers crossed for them all!

Our boys’ and girls’ teams attended the County Qualifier for the Sportshall Athletics at Ellesmere College along with 5 other schools who have qualified to take part from North Shropshire. They competed in track and field events including obstacle, individual team relays, long jump, triple jump, speed bounce, javelin, vertical jump and chest pass. We finished in 5th and 5th= place respectively and our Year 4 competitor won a medal for Honesty, demonstrating one of our School Games values.

Henry Broadhurst from Tennis Shropshire has been into school for our first of four Tennis coaching sessions. Years 4,5 and 6 have played games and practised their tennis skills and, of course, have had great fun!

All our children enjoyed a Cricket Engagement day with Shropshire coach, Nigel, they took part in fun activities and practised their fielding and batting.

Year 5 and 6 girls went to Lakelands to take part in a Handball event with Cockshutt and Ellesmere Primary Schools. It is not a sport we have played before so it was a great opportunity for them to learn the skills and play some games. The session was led by the Year 10 sports leaders, 2 of whom were pupils at Criftins, so it was great to see them passing on their knowledge to our children.

Year 4, 5 and 6 children took part in an inter-house gymnastics competition. In pairs or small groups they used the skills they had learnt during their PE lessons to compose a short routine and perform in front of our in house gymnastics coach Mrs Ellis. She was impressed by the quality of their routines and the children really enjoyed using what they have learnt in a competitive environment.
