Sports Spring 2022

Shropshire Schools Archery Festival. 12 children took part today in the Start Archery and School Games Festival at the British Ironworks run by Croesoswallt Archers. They had a great morning playing target and long distance arrows and then experiencing archery with the help of the volunteers from the club. Many thanks to the club members and Mollie Croxon for organising the morning, for club information please find the information in Community What’s On.

We had a fantastic first Cross Country event at the Marches School, children from the Oswestry and Ellesmere areas come together on 4 different dates and run against their peers, Year 3/4 run a distance of 1200m and Year 5/6 run 1600m. The schools compete for an overall trophy and the children compete to qualify for the next round over the course of the 4 meetings, it was great to see so many children from our area being out and able to compete again. Criftins' children did brilliantly and we look forward to the next 3 meetings!

Our Year 3 children have been to Shrewsbury Sports Village to participate in the County Engagement Festival where they took part in 10 different activities throughout the afternoon. 15 of our Year 5/ 6 children did a fantastic job acting as Young Leaders by running 5 of the activities, the organisers were very impressed with them.

Mollie Croxon has been in to train some of Year 5 and 6 children in preparation for the county event this week where they will be helping the Shropshire School Games Officers along with Energize run the event.

Years 5 and 6 enjoyed their afternoon at the wonderful tennis facility at Ellesmere College where they played tennis with 4 other local schools.

We had 2 children attend the 2022 Shropshire Athletic Association Under 11’s Year 5 and 6 Cross Country Championships - both are weekly runners with our cross country club - well done to you both!

Shropshire Cricket Board’s Tyler visited us for a cricket taster session - children from the whole school took part in activities to inspire - an introduction to cricket, play - by experiencing cricket, compete - giving them a chance to shine in a personal best competition and giving them a pathway by promoting local clubs’ transition routes for extra cricket - All Stars for age 5 to 8 year olds and Dynamos from 8 to 11.

#LetGirls Play Biggest EVER Football Session. The girls had a fun session this afternoon when we joined in with the National #LetGirls Play Biggest EVER Football Session. By 2024, The FA’s and Barclays ambition is for girls to have the same football opportunities as boys in schools and clubs. #LetGirlsPlay is a campaign to drive influence and change perceptions, showing that football can and should be played by girls. It is bringing together a growing community of people of all genders, ages and backgrounds who want to champion equal access for girls, helping create independent, resilient young girls who will be a force for good in all local communities.

We held our KS1 Indoor Athletics competition with our invited schools - Cockshutt, Whittington, Welshampton and Gobowen - the children took part in 5 different field events (speed bounce, standing long jump, target throw, javelin, seated ball throw) and individual and team track events. Our Year 6 Young Leaders played a huge part in helping run the competition:they ran the stations, kept the scores and explained and encouraged the children - thank you so much for your help!

Year 6 Junior Leaders
Our Year 6 children had an afternoon training for the KS1 athletics competition which we will be hosting after half term, they practised running the stations, scoring and timing for the afternoon.

Year 3 and 4 Dodgeball. The children had a wonderful afternoon with a nail biting finish having brilliantly played some very exciting matches.

KS1 Gymnastics

We went to the Marches School with 10 Year 1 and 2 children to take part in the inter school competition against 5 other schools. The children had to perform 2 routines independently - floor and vault- in a huge sports hall in front of judges and other children.  They all displayed great determination and self-belief, we were so very proud of each and every one of them and were delighted when it was announced that they had come first.  A wonderful achievement for 5 and 6 year olds!

INTER SCHOOL BASKETBALL. Cockshutt joined us for a fast and furious game of basketball, we played 7 minute matches which resulted in a 11 -11 draw, it was great to see the children working as a team and having a great afternoon of team sport.

High 5 Netball Tournament

What a great afternoon we had at The Marches School playing in the inter school tournament.  The children had to rotate positions in every match which gives them the opportunity to play each position on the netball court.  We played 3 games in the first round winning 1 and drawing 2 which qualified us for the trophy final where we played Oswestry, Bryn Offa and Whittington schools.  We won 1, drew 1 and lost 1 which meant we finished in 3rd place which was a terrific achievement.

KS2 all enjoyed their afternoon Tennis Taster Session, with Henry from Baschurch Tennis Club, playing a selection of games and activities.

Football Festival - Our Year 3 and 4 girls attended a fabulous football festival at Lakelands School organised by our School Games Officer Mollie Croxon - they came back into school with great smiles on their faces!
