Criftins Church of England Primary School

Sports Summer 2022

We were invited to Ysgol Y Gwernant School by our Shropshire cricket coach, Nigel, for a morning of Kwik Cricket with some of our Year 5 and Year 4 children. They had a great time and their cricket skills showed great improvement by the end of the morning.

It was great to be able to hold our sports day this year and for us to invite our parents to share their children’s sporting abilities. Our KS1 event was in the morning and run entirely by our Year 6 leaders, they made an amazing job of organising their own stations, rules and scoresheets and explaining their event to the younger children. The children were in mixed age group teams and the results will be announced in our Sports Assembly at the end of term.

KS2 Sports Day. Our KS2 children competed in a Pentathlon event which included shuttle run, speed bounce, vertical high jump, standing long jump and chest push plus an extra station of javelin throwing. The Year 6 Sports Leaders ran the warm- up session for all the children and, at the end of the afternoon, we also ran our traditional running races which are always a favourite with the children! The children were divided into mixed Year Groups and the team results will be announced in our Sports Assembly next week.

A group of children joined our SGO Mollie Croxon at Criftins Tennis Club for a fun morning of tennis.

Year 5/6 Football at Whittington School. This was a first outing for the boys playing as a team in a tournament, they played 4 games in the first round finishing in 2nd place to go forward to the Champions League Final where they finished in 4th place overall. We look forward to continuing to practice each week and competing against our local schools.

26 children from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 attended the Oswestry and District Primary Schools Athletics Championships which was held at Queensway Athletics Stadium in Wrexham. The children competed in a variety of track and field events including long jump, vertical high jump, ball throw, sprints, long distance and relay races. The children had a super day and Criftins finished by winning the Overall Small Schools Trophy for the second time which was amazing! The David Evans trophy, awarded to the person who had made an outstanding contribution to sport, was also presented to one of our Year 6 pupils who has always worked very hard at her sport and who is always quietly there ready to help when asked and shows great determination and commitment and is a great role model for all our children.

English Schools Gymnastics Association English National Gymnastics Championships, Fenton Manor. We took a team of 4 girls to this event who had to perform an individual, acro and vault routine in a full size arena, this is the first time that 3 of the girls had ever performed in a competition, other than in the KS1 competition some years ago. 1 member of the team belongs to a local gymnastics club and the other 3 have been coached by Mrs Ellis in a weekly after school session. We finished in 14th place out of 18 teams from all over England which was a huge achievement for us and we are very proud of their performances.

Year 5 and 6 girls went to Whittington Cricket Club to take part in a friendly inter school competition- the girls had a lovely morning and all received a Dynamo T shirt.

We have been very fortunate to have tennis coach Tyler Smith to coach Years 4, 5 and 6 children for 5 weeks, the children have learnt their individual strokes and have played some matches today, the improvement we have seen has be huge and they are now confidently able to play some really good rallies.

Congratulations! One of our team has qualified to compete at the County Finals swimming in the North West Shropshire team in June. Good luck!

Our final Cross Country competition at the Marches School was run in traditional wet weather conditions! The children have run over the course of 4 weeks and their scores have gone towards an overall Criftins’ School team total, so every place has contributed. Each team member has shown determination and commitment to running and we look forward to continuing with our training in preparation for September. We had 3 medal winners - 2 bronze and 1 silver, many congratulations to all the runners and thank you to our very supportive parents.

We had 5 children who competed at the North West Shropshire swimming trials at Oswestry School. They swam timed trials for each stroke to gain a place in the team to compete at the County Finals at the Quarry in June.
