Criftins Church of England Primary School

Autumn Term 2023

Welcome to the Autumn Term 2023 and Year 6.

So let’s have a look at what we have been doing. Every few days and throughout the week we will try to add new content so this is the page to come back to so you can see what we have been doing.

Criftins Christmas Extravaganza.

Over the past few weeks we have been preparing for our annual celebration and whole school performance. Bringing the whole school together and our local community is so important especially at this special time.

On Monday, we visited the War Memorial in St Matthew’s Church. We laid a wreath, did observational drawings and paid our respects. We discussed the memorial’s importance and the children were surprised to discover that it is not listed.

This week, we joined a live lesson led by ‘Picture News’. The focus of the session was ‘British Values and Protected Characteristics’. This was followed up with circle time in Class 4. Lots of wonderful and open discussion.

Remembrance Day 2023. A beautiful service led by our worship team to remember and honour the fallen. Class 4 read the names of the soldiers who left Criftins to go to war and never returned home. It was very moving.

Remembering those from Criftins who gave their lives in war.

Practising our hockey skills in a match. A wonderful way to get our bodies moving. Great fun too!

We are really enjoying the Hokusai unit that we are studying in art. Take a look at the superb pencil drawings of ‘The Great Wave’ that the children have done. We did a gallery walk on the playground to showcase our work.

Cardboard King.

Today we welcomed back Darrell Wakelam who previously worked with us producing our 3d model of pupils and our school. Today was another creation but this time for our library. An opening book with all sorts flying out. Dragons, octopus and a real love of books.

We joined schools across the world for a poetry workshop

We have been practising our Harvest Festival performance

Geography : Digi-Maps.

This term as we begin to explore our new topic we are delving into our new online subscription site called Digi-maps. Unlike Google maps, Digi-maps has a number of additional options and overlays. Maps can be edited over, saved, distances measured and it’s even possible to travel back in time to view how the place being examined looked. Great fun, great learning !

Science : Animal adaptation.

Our Science topic is well underway as we research and find out more about animals. Today was about identification and information finding to produce a report and response.

Rest Easy Ambassadors.

Promoting and supporting Mental Health is so important. Throughout school we have a pupil led Rest Easy squad who are there to help and guide other pupils. Today was all about talking to class 1 to explain all about our support program.

Enjoying our weekly music lessons with Mr Kitcher. This term, we are practising beats with sticks and pads. Great fun!

The Year 6 Worship Team led their first ever collective worship for the whole school. They did a superb job.

Some of our wonderful Year 6s have been selling cookies to raise money for a very special and local charity event, in aid of Brain Tumour Awareness.

We attended an event organised by the Oswestry Rotary Club called ‘Lifeline’, which was all about keeping safe in today’s world. It was a brilliant day, with over ten different workshops, including the police and fire service.
