Criftins Church of England Primary School

Sports Spring 2025

Wales were the winners of the Spring term house points for treat, the children were delighted when they came into the hall and saw the climbing equipment! They enjoyed a few minutes to stop and enjoy an ice cream before playing scatter rounders and cricket!

Year 5 and 6 have planned, practised and performed their own gymnastics routines, they have been scored and their scores will go towards this term’s Inter-House competition. It has been a great opportunity to use all that they have learnt in Gymnastics and be creative using that knowledge and working together as a team. Their routines had to include 2 rolls, 2 balances, 1 turn and 2 jumps and they were able to perform in unison or canon. They performed great routines and have enjoyed the experience.

It is so good to see our children out on the field again in this beautiful weather taking part in the free football lunchtime club.  The club is run on 2 different days of the week with the Wednesday session catering for the Year 5 and 6 boys and the Friday session for the Year 3 and 4 boys and girls and the Year 5 and 6 girls.  The turnout is amazing and we hope to get them ready to play in the cluster competitions in the Autumn.

Cross country Club continues to run on a Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime for all KS 2 children who want to take part.  We have 20 children taking part in this year's Shropshire Schools' cumulative half marathon with the final 1.1 mile due to be completed at Shrewsbury showground on 12th April, so they have been busy clocking up a total of 87 laps over the past few weeks.

Along with the Daily Mile this is a great way to keep our children 60 minutes active!

Schools Football Week took place on the week beginning 31st March, the sun shone down and we were at long last able to make good use of our school field at lunchtime with the children taking part in some fun activities.

We joined eight other schools at the Marches School to take part in the KS1 Gymnastics competition.  The team had to individually perform a bench and floor routine in front of judges and the other teams which they have learnt in recent weeks.  They all did an amazing job with each child demonstrating courage, passion, self-belief, respect and team work - we were very proud of them!

Year 6 children, who are due to transition to Lakelands in September of this year, took part in a multi sports morning organised by Year 10 Lakelands’ pupils and our SGO Louis Gray. Lakelands Academy has been participating in a Youth Voice project with the Youth Sports Trust, as a result of the project the group of Year 10 students who took part decided to organise a multi sports festival for Year 6 students who will be joining the school in September. Three of the leaders today were ex pupils from Criftins, so not only was it great to see them but also familiar faces that our Year 6 will recognise when they start in Year 7. They enjoyed playing a selection of sports: Boccia, Kurling, Archery,Team Building and Basketball. We were joined by Cockshutt and Whittington schools with them all joining together to give them an opportunity to mix with one another, make new friends and help to alleviate any anxieties they might have.

Criftins Girls' and Boys' teams both qualified for the North Shropshire Sportshall Athletics Final which was held at Ellesmere College. Seven teams took part in the event competing in Chest Push, Javelin, Vertical High Jump, Triple Jump, Speed Bounce, Long Jump and Obstacle Relay, Lap Relays and an over under Relay. The atmosphere was amazing and the teams worked incredibly hard to finish in 3rd place for the girls and 4th place for the boys. We had 3 pupils nominated for special individual awards for demonstrating Determination, Self-Belief and Respect which are 3 of our 6 School Sports Values. This was an amazing result for us as a small school competing against schools which are much larger than we are. It was a great reflection of how hard all our children work to perform at their very best.

Let Girls Play. From Nursery to Year 6, Criftins Primary took part in the FA and Barclays ‘ Biggest Ever Football Session’ across England as part of the FA’s Let Girls Play campaign. The nationwide sessions highlight the importance of unlocking equal opportunities for girls to participate in football in schools and raise awareness for the Barclays School Partnerships Programme.

Jayne and Tom from TNS came into Collective Worship to talk to the children about the local football club.  They brought their 2 mascots in with them, Ozzy and Ffraidy, and every child in school was given a season ticket to the men's JD Cymru Premier Games.

Jayne is in school twice a week to deliver an afterschool club for KS1 and KS2 children.

Today, Criftins hosted the annual KS 1 Indoor Athletics competition. We welcomed Welshampton, Newtown, Gobowen and Moreton Hall to join is for a morning of field and track events including speed bounce, long jump, javelin, target throwing and chest push. The stations were run by our brilliant Year 5 children who set up, timed, scored, demonstrated and encouraged all the competitors, the event could not have taken place without them.

The final of 3 Sportshall Athletics competitions was held last night at the Marches.  Our team of 8 children competed in Vertical High Jump, Javelin, Speed Bounce and an obstacle relay culminating in a final 6th place position out of 11 schools moving up a place from 7th.  As a small school competing against schools of up to 600 pupils we are very proud of this sporting achievement

Our Year 4 Dodgeball team triumphantly returned to school with the winners trophy after playing 10 matches against 10 local schools. They have been practising in their daily Wake and Shake morning sessions which start at 8.40am until 8.55am, their throwing and catching skills have improved immensely which clearly showed at the competition.

We took part in the first of three meets at the Marches school in the Sportshall Athletics, competing against 10 other schools from our local cluster.  This week’s event consisted of Standing Long Jump, Chest Press and relay races, we look forward to next week’s meet!

Our first competition for 2025 was Dodgeball where we competed with ten other schools from our cluster at the Marches School.  Our team of 6 and squad of 8 played some amazing matches winning 7, drawing 1 and narrowly losing just 3 resulting in 3rd place overall - brilliant!

The Wake and Shake Dodgeball sessions held Monday to Friday before school have definitely had a great impact!
